As
a young girl of 12 years old, and inspired by her mother, Agnes
first started yoga. And when she was 14, Dona Holleman came in
her life. She studied privately with Dona for a few years,
before moving to New Zealand where she got a job as an
occupational therapist in the day department of a psychological
hospital. Whilst there, and still only 19, she first started
teaching yoga. In 1970 she went to London with Dona and there
met Mr. Iyengar for the first time. Her Guru then said "Come to
India and I’ll teach you". So from January until June of 1971,
Guruji taught her in his home, with only 4 or 5 other people
present. These were highly treasured near-private classes which
she has ever since looked on as a great gift. After this, Agnes
studied with Gurui regularly for 1 month in London, and then 1
month in Gstaad where he also taught Yehudi Menuhin. In 1975 she
was back in India ... and attended the grand opening of the
Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute. Her marriage to Leo
produced two beautiful daughters, and led to her specialisation
in yoga for pregnancy, massage for babies, and yoga for the
mother and child. Agnes was present at the teachers training
course held in Pune in 2000. She is currently the moderator of
the Dutch examination committee. Agnes is one of BKS
Iyengar's most senior and proficient students who teacher from
the heart with love and passion.
