[D] "Off The Mat" / "Giving Back"

BKS Iyengar has touched the lives of millions through his writings and teachings within yoga. But he has also always recognized that yoga is a part of life. Yogis still live in society. As his most recent book Light On Life demonstrates, Guruji has successully combined his extraordinary career as one of the greatest yogis who has ever lived with being a husband, father and grandfather. He has also become known for his work in Bellur, his place of birth, where he has established a chartable foundation to bring needed amenities such as schools, eye clinics, a hospital, electricity, and various other public works and services. Yoga is an avenue for social transformation. Many yoga teachers and practitioners have been similarly emboldened to open their hearts and lives to society, and to become involved in a wide array of social and community projects. Many of its most renowned teachers and practitioners have become leaders both in their own and in global communities, enacting in the best way they can the universal timeless principles codified by Sage Patanjali. These sessions will contain many inspiring and uplifting stories of yogis spreading the dharma through their work with AIDS, prisons, children, animal welfare, hospice work, in war zones, environmental activism, political action and the like. (Sessions can vary from 1 to 2 hrs).
